Neo-Decadence: 12 Manifestos

I'm very happy to announce the impending release of Neo-Decadence: 12 Manifestos on Snuggly Books. My Manifesto of Neo-Decadent Occultism is included, along with several others (a couple of which I was honored to contribute to).

The early 21st Century: a gilded age of pious guilt, poison nostalgia, environmental collapse, unchecked pandemics, corporate franchises, workshopped creativity and personal brands. Standing against the Neo-Passéist tide, Neo-Decadence presents a total reformulation of everyday life. What is the vertical table? Why is a sex helmet indispensable for all assignations? What is the proper spirit of electronic gaming? Covering fashion, cooking, architecture, occultism, poetry, gardening, and other areas of concern to all young people, the present volume is the ONLY resource for those wishing to shrug off the cerements of late capitalist literature and art. If you’ve ever wanted to proudly commit commercial suicide while serving your own head on a plate as an offering to your inner daemon, consult this collection of manifestos—as much a personal style guide as it is a declaration of uncompromising aesthetic war.

  3. The title of this book looked promising but upon reading it there is disappointment. Though well written and interesting;this book is NOT about decadence. This book is no more than a 21 centenary remake of surrealism. All the manifestos are nothing but rehashed surrealism. The authors are intent on carving out a niche for themself-and in the same breath castigate genre writing. Take the one on women's fashion " Endlessly repurosing found material, she drapes herself in garments patched with logos of different brands, strung with skeins of dandelions and trailing scraps and rags" This is just a modern version of something Salvador Dali might wear. Take this from "Against Neo-Passeism" "Imagine an entire novel posed of endless variations on the mis-use of the Oxford comma....The first competent author to pull it off will be hailed among us as a literary hero"
This could almost be straight out of Dada. I could go on. If you want an interesting take on what is nothing more than surrealism then the book is well worth the read You will find very little here of the Jean Lorrain type of decadence. mostly nothing about 21 century ennui or world weariness Nothing about sex and very little about drugs and perversity key notes of traditional decadence. The book is just about a bunch of guys/gals trying to find a niche/genre from which they will be commodified commercialized and make a heap of dollars from-all of which they condemn in the book. This book is a work of surrealism Jean Lorain and the fin de siecle decadents would condemn it as an attempt at commercialization which they would have seen to be part of a society in the throws of decadence. In other words the only decadence about this books is the authors motive and not its contents

  4. The only response that comes to mind is that I think it highly unlikely that anybody involved will be making a heap of dollars from this book anytime soon (or from Neo-Decadence in general). Speaking as a contributor, I make a heap of dollars from my day job. If I was looking to cash in on writing, I'd probably choose something far more commercially viable.

  6. I've been reading some of it, yeah. Can definitely see the decadent influence.

I can see where a person might not click with Neo-Decadence if they're looking for something more in line with the original decadent poets and authors. Neo-Decadence is really not the same thing as traditional decadence. In any case, for my part, I'm more concerned with trying to give rise to new forms of occult fiction (abandoning all existing earmarks of the genre, which, as a life-long practicing occultist, I have no interest in)—not for glory or money, as very few people are really going to care about that kind of thing, but just to try to open the door to something new. There seems to be some overlap between that aim and Neo-Decadence. The occult manifesto that I wrote for the book is purely intended to go sharply in the opposite direction of the standard mores of occult literature.

Anyway—thanks for pointing me to the poems. I'll read more.

    My best.
